While always better shared with friends, I am often found with a dram in the wee hours alone. IMHO celtic music and whisky go well together, one of my choices is the music of Loreena McKennitt (a mate of Robert Pel's).

Islay Whiskies

Having recently returned for Islay and having a chance to visit all seven distilleries - I ask, what is your favourite Islay malt? Me, Laphroaig has always been a winner, Ardbeg too. Right now I am enjoying Bruichladdich (they were very generous with the tasting). What do you think?

According to the Scottish Press it seems drinks giant Diageo are closing the Johnny Walker Plant at Kilmarnock with the loss of 700 jobs and so severing the towns 200 year old link to the brand.

Silver anniversary present

Today my wife Nina and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, and she surprised me with the most wonderful anniversary present: a bottle of Glenmorangie Quarter Century edition - distilled the year we were married. I can't give you tasting notes, as I won't be opening the bottle for a while, but I'm sure it will taste great when I do. In the meantime, here's a few photos from the unboxing.

Today I went to Gent in Belgium to attend the Scottish Fair and Malt Whisky Festival.

The Scottish Fair wasn't that exciting, but the Whisky Festival was!

late christmas present

My daughter, who is a chef, lives about 180 miles from me and didn't get over the mountains for Christmas this year. She showed up at the house yesterday and brought Christmas presents...for me it was a bottle of Laphroig Quarter Cask. I have not cracked it yet but I am a great fan of the Laphroig 15, so looking forward to this bottle. I turn 63 on the second of February...that may be a good time to savour a wee dram. ..or two.

Rare blend

I was strolling along the liqueur aisle in one of our Supermarkets, looking what selection on Whisky can be found. Mostly they are from bad to worse kind of blends. Can see some single malts. But I saw a bottle saying "rare blend"??!! What would that be? Assuming it's blended, with no idea what is so rare in blending.

Some ideas from you guys? P1M maybe?

Scottish Parliament

Has anyone tried the blended whisky from Scottish Parliament? Some friends just returned from a trip home and brought back a bottle of Scottish Parliament blended whisky from Edinburgh as a gift. They even got it signed by their local member of Parliament.

It will hold a nice location in the showcase, but I wonder how the taste is and I don't want to open it just yet. It may get cracked on Burns night, but not before.

I need to ask a question here although I am not sure anyone can (or will ) answer it...

I am a fan of certain single malt whiskeys. Right now my favourite is Laphroig 15, but in the past I have (and still do) enjoyed Lagavulin, Talisker and a few others.

So to the central issue...there are any number of folks here who bring more expertise to the task than I do and who have keener palates as...

I have recently become interested in the world of Scotch. I am an ale and beer drinker, mostly dark beers, pale ales, stouts and porters. I used to drink alot of bourbon, mostly Jim Beam (can't stand Jack Daniels). Also like Crown Royal. My only experience with Scotch has been blends. I tried Johnny Walker (Black and Red I believe) some 15 years ago and remember liking it. Recently I tried J&B Rare and Chivas Regal. Came home from London with two malts - one was the Edradour Distillery Edition, which is an old favourite of mine, and not available in this country, so I buy a bottle whenever I have a chance.
The other one is an experiment - Auchentoshan 18. Does anyone know anything about it? Robertson?

I've just inherited a beautiful art deco decanter that belonged to my grandfather. I was hoping to use it for single malt, but am wondering whether decanting will affect the flavour of the whisky. Any advice?
