Rod, I've found that wearing a kilt is the best way to expose the narrow minded, racist, homophobic, bigots in our midst. If someone is going to rail me for how I chose to dress then it's unlikely I'll be wanting to maintain their aquaintance. The kilt helps to draw out the worst in their personality and chops out the tiresome process of discovering their prejudice (there's a better word but it isn't appropriate here) the long way. That said, this isn't the only reason I wear the kilt but is just one of the numerous advantages I've discovered.

Blokes who might be easily phased by the opinions of others would perhaps be ill-advised to chose the kilt. On the other hand, blokes who are unsure of their sense of self and are uncomfortable with chaps wearing the kilt should perhaps avoid associating with Kilties.

One other thing. There are bigots among kilt wearers too. They are just harder to spot.

Best Regards
JOHN
