When you buy a sporran you'll most likely receive a chain-strap with it. These chain straps are for dress occasions and unsuitable for casual use.

I could not agree more, Robin. Chain straps have been my pet peeve for years.
A single leather strap, without the D ring clips, passed through the back of the day-wear sporran is best. These used to be standard issue when I was younger - chains and D-rings being reserved, as you say, for full dress sporrans. Take care,
Ham. |

Loftlie and Hamish are both right.
The other advantage of a sporran strap worn as Hamish describes that I have found is that you can slide the sporran along the belt to the right hip easily, leaving the strap buckle and keeper in the middle of the back where it should be. I do this slide manoeuver either: a) for driving my car when kilted (I don't want the sporran between me and the seat belt when the belt's fastened), b) for dancing at ceilidhs when I don't want the sporran to bang into the lassie I'm dancing with, or, c) how do I put this delicately? When visiting the room of porcelain fixtures, for extra clearance when lifting the aprons. I too got a free chain strap with my dress sporran, and have never worn it, formally or informally. Steve

Re: About sporran straps

A ladies thin plain belt makes an ideal sporran belt for the reasons Steve lists above, and it is extremely inexpensive to boot.
I received a fairly nice quality chain belt with a sporran I purchased from Stillwater Kilts. I have worn it only with my formal outfit. I do think that the chain does look nice with a a formal jacket. Perhaps it's the shine of the chrome that matchs the gleam of the buttons. I wouldn't wear it any other time though. Cheers Jamie |

I too find that a thin leather ladies belt makes for a great strap.

Personally I don't like the free chrome and shiny sporran chains at all. I've seen them quiet often around, but I still do like a proper leather strap best. There is one chain I fancy, but that's way too expensive I think.
![]() The price should be around 80 Pounds...

80 is way too expensive
I got mine from www.kiltsandmore.de 69,00 (about 46,40) Still not cheap, but it's a lovely dress chain |

I went to a local leather shop and told the shopkeeper that I wanted a very slim belt. He made me a leather strap from material that is used for lady's handpurses. Very practical solution, it cost me only 9 Euro's.

Ai, they're coming in the same shipment as the belts and the strap. I liked them from the moment I saw them
and they're not too expensive. Something nice for a change. |

I did'nt know there were also hangers, but it seems to me that it must be unpleasant that you cannot swing your sporran aside easily.

Re: About sporran straps

A small caution/reminder:
just remember that when ordering a leather sporran strap, it is (usually?) the actual length of strap you get - not suited to the kilt waist you have. Sorry if that didn't make sense. What I mean is: if your kilt-waist is 36", then the sporran strap needs to be quite a few inches longer Patrick Murphy

Re: About sporran straps

Makes sense
The problem is...some shops send straps the exact lenght, while others send a strap matching the waist...a few inches longer. Same with kilts...some ask for the total lenght of the kilt...others add the rise to the given lenght. Can be tricky...good communication is essential. |

I found mine for less also....about €60,00 (£40,00) if I remember it well...still not cheap, but it's a nice chain.
£80,00 is way over the top for such a chain
