Sorry, I should have defined my terms a little better:-

By saying 'heaver gauge' I meant a larger denier number, and of course you should be selecting stockings rather than tights, unless you're going to take a pair of scissors to them afterwards, or roll your kilts in pairs?

When out purchasing stockings as kilt carriers, I'd look for 80 - 100 denier plain sheer stockings or knee socks (see my comment above about using these in pairs) in any colour you like (I favour black).

I can happily get you a few pairs and mail them to you if the process of purchasing them has the potential to raise your blood pressure so markedly.

[Note - should anyone care, the the 'denier' number is defined as the mass in grammes of 9,000 meters of yarn. Silks start at about 10, thin nylon stockings are about 15, up to really thick and chunky stockings at 80-100]

When, some while ago, my then fianc(now my wife) was unwell, I was sent out to buy amongst other things, some stockings for her. I got her to give me a precise specification, which I diligently wrote down.

I then went to John Lewis, and simply asked the lady assistant in the stockings department for '2 pairs of xxxxxx...' reading off the piece of paper as I did so. She was completely unfazed by this, and said something like: 'Good - I know exactly what your wife means... these!'

I found I was more amused by the fact that the assistant automatically assumed that I was married and was buying stockings for someone else than I was embarrassed at being there.

Since then, I've found buying stockings (kilted or unkilted) isn't that scary, especially if you know roughly what you're after before you go into the shop.
